BCCI names Virat Kohli in India ODI squad for England tour subject to fitness after IPL 2026 hamstring injury, board keeps 2027 plans for Kohli and Rohit confidential
The BCCI on Sunday named Virat Kohli in India’s ODI squad for the England tour. However, his selection will be subject to fitness, as the former captain continues to recover from a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL 2026 final.
Kohli suffered a rare distal semimembranosus tendon tear (a type of hamstring injury) during the IPL final in Ahmedabad last month. The injury forced him out of the ODI series against Afghanistan, but he was named in the squad for the upcoming England ODI series, starting July 14.
On Monday, Kohli landed in Bengaluru as social media was flooded with his airport-arrival videos. And as the discussion around his clearance intensified, it’s expected that the ace Indian will get the nod to board the flight to the UK.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continue to dominate discussions around India’s 2027 global campaign. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has asserted that “strategic discussions in the board room" will remain confidential.
While both former captains are keen to feature in the marquee event, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir have stayed non-committal on whether there will be space for the senior duo in the squad.
Speaking to PTI, Saikia said that all stakeholders are aligned and that the process is ongoing.
“We have a very well-knit team and a lot of experts. All stakeholders are taken on board," Saikia told PTI during an exclusive interaction.
“Whatever decisions that are made involve the cricket committee, the selectors and all other stakeholders, including the support staff, the head coach and the players concerned. There are regular conversations taking place. For that reason, we do not need any special session of interaction. This is an ongoing process."
“I do not think I should disclose anything before the media or the public because these are strategic discussions. I am not authorised to speak about them before the media. Secondly, these are matters that should remain within the boardroom," he added.
